NEW YORK CITY SNAPSHOTS In Plain View

NEW YORK CITY SNAPSHOTS
In Plain View

By Anthony Buccino

Anthony Buccino’s third photography collection focuses on the 15 year period from about 1999 to 2014, and includes more than 150 color snapshots of the Big Apple.

"Snapshot photography, to me, is basically walking around with a camera and shooting whatever looks interesting. I like odd and cute things, but also the ordinary. For the most part the photos are happenstance.

"When I worked for a newspaper in 1990, I was reporter and cameraman. That's when I got used to having a camera with me all the time. Now, I hardly leave the house without one of my Canon cameras.

"The photos in this collection were shot with various cameras including my Olympus OM-1 film camera, two Fujifilm cameras - consecutively, my later Canon digital, and possibly a smart-phone along the way."

Here’s to the nonstop energy generated by this big old city and the people who buzz busily on its wild and crazy streets day and night.

Here’s to the bright lights and the pot holes.

Here’s to the hapless commuters and the more hapless residents who manage to thrive in this city’s intensity.

Here’s to you who stood in plain view making these snapshots memorable.

Here’s to you for taking the time to make your own stories to go along with these snapshots of an open city with hidden views in plain sight.

Here’s to less-than-perfect photos that tell a story.

We’ll be short and only when there’s news to share.

1.    Belleville Sons Honor Roll
The project that began more than 15 years ago, to identify and remember the fallen soldiers from Belleville, N.J., is having long-term effects.

In the past 13 months, Belleville has dedicated thirteen street signs to fallen soldiers from the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Vietnam War and the Cold War.

If we look back at 1999, the Belleville Memorial had a partial list of the lost soldiers, sailors and Marines lost in service. In 2005, using the names of the fallen discovered in my research, the town added more than 150 names, where there had been none, to its Belleville Veterans Memorial on Union Avenue.

The research continues as we learn more information about these Belleville Sons from their families as we prepare to dedicate street signs in their memory.

Street naming for Capt. William A. Branch of Belleville, KIA in the Vietnam War. Washington Avenue and Overlook Avenue, Belleville, N.J. 11 a.m.

2.    Nutley Sons Honor Roll
Don’t tell anyone yet, but we are continuing in our effort to work with the powers-that-be in Nutley to dedicate streets signs for the 140 fallen Nutley Sons.

3.    Book Projects
You may be aware Anthony is juggling three book projects. One project is Nutley Notables Volume 2.
Another project involves research into murder, mayhem and major crime in a typical north Jersey town.
And the third book is that Mosquito Man book simmering on a back burner.

4.    Other Stuff
Anthony continues to shoot photographs around town during his walks. There’s a Facebook page for that.

He also created a Facebook group for Nutleyphotos, old and new. He also moderates Belleville and Nutley groups.

Anthony also maintains the websites and Facebook groups for Kingsland Manor and the Nutley Historical Society.

Don’t forget, books make great holiday gifts. Anthony’s books are all available on Amazon.

A Brief Respite For A Restive Spirit

You wouldn't believe me if I told you. So, I might as well claim that I was abducted by aliens from another planet. One of the chief aliens said there are two kinds of science fiction: they come here or we go there.

Domino's Pizza box

In spite of carrying two cameras and plenty of batteries through the four-days of rain at Waterloo Village in Stanhope, N.J., I only have one pictue of myself that shows I might have been there speaking with one of the head aliens, a fellow called Billy Collins. He's the Arnold Stang of poetry.

I was quoted in someone's blog for saying something sort of clever. You can decide that for yourself.

The Rutles 30th Anniversary

Thirty years ago tonight on WNBC-TV, All You Need Is Cash, the story of The Rutles, Dirk, Nasty, Stig and Barry, premiered on national TV in the United States.

Now, this tri-decade anniversary of this historic event may have passed unnoticed were it not for the live revival concert in New York later this week of the faux four.

Copyright © 2008 by Anthony Buccino, all rights reserved

For those of you who may not have been around 30 years ago when the show debuted, below are a collages from the record album (a 12-inch disc with a hole in the middle that spun on a turntable and through a direct contact diamond head needle produced sound through one or more woofers and tweeters - but that's not important right now) artwork.

The joke was that the Rutles was a parody of The Beatles, a four-man group quite popular at the time although they had split up several years earlier.

After all these decades, the faux four have a web site - which has lyrics to a half-dozen songs that weren't the LP release - "This page last updated September 1, 1997" - which has been around awhile - we suppose while they worked out the royalties and reunion pay distribution, no doubt.

It wouldn't have occured to me that this was the 30th anniversary of the show, except that Ken Dashow's Sunday morning show Breakfast With The Beatles had on as guests two of the four Rutles.

So, thanks, Ken, for the heads-up. I'm busy this week, otherwise I'd love to drop in and see the live show.

PS - Yes, the artwork is from a promotional copy of the original LP - your favorite uncle was a music critic at the time. I can't see that I wrote anything about The Rutles at the time. In fact, it looks like my review career was waning.

THANKSGIVING = Self-service IAMS

Zamboni, our chocolate Labrador retriever, found something to be thankful for recently when he discovered the lid to Mr. Food-Can misplaced and the IAMS chow within easy reach of a big, strong, sweet dog such as himself.

He'd take a mouthful of food from the bag, spit it on the floor and then eat the pieces. Repeat.

WEEKEND SUBWAY - MONDAY PUDDLE

Pardon us as we contemplate the Navy while staring in the Reflecting Pond North at the Newark City Subway light rail station in Branch Brook Station.

You can say the place flooded Monday morning and evening because of the heavy rain.

But the place flooded because the drains were clogged ... probably with cigarette butts from the ineffective no smoking ban on the NJ Transit platforms.

If you arrive on the weekend to see what's left of the famous cherry blossom trees blooming in Branch Brook Park and Belleville Park, you won't have to worry about riding on the light rail on weekends. Buses are provided ... for your convenience.
