An un-ordinary day

Notes from Sept. 11, 2001

My office is directly across the Hudson River from the World Trade Center, about one mile due west. It's likely that when you were watching the fires burn on that awful day, if the camera angle had buildings under construction in the foreground (this side of the river) that camera was on our roof, one floor above us.

We used to have a monitor of that camera - it showed the ships and sailboats in New York Harbor.

That day, I was sitting at my desk when people began rushing to the opposite end of our floor, about one hundred yards east of where I sat, and looking at the building on fire.

We all thought it was a terrible accident. I hesitated, but then decided to record it and went downstairs to buy a throw-away camera. While I was in line at the CVS, someone came in and said a second plane had crashed. I picked up two more cameras...

You Can't Get There From Here

The 12-mile trip from northeastern Essex County to the Hudson River at Jersey City is about 40 minutes by car.

That's about 20 minutes to Jersey City and at least another 20 minutes to cross the four miles of Jersey City.

Of course, that's on a good day, with no traffic tie ups or bad weather, or such. (Now, there's a good laugh! HAH!)

Parking, in September 1999, was about $135 a month and jumped to well over $225 a month in June 2000, when Hyatt hotel construction began on the pier that until then had provided parking for several hundred cars.
Nowadays, if you have to ask, you can't afford it.



To make a long story short. I don't make that drive anymore.

In July 2000, I began using mass transportation to get to work - for the first time in my life. It's less than $135 a month with passes and such.

Having grown up in urban-suburban northern New Jersey, taking a bus or train to work was always something other people did.

Besides, to get from northeastern Essex County to Englewood, or East Brunswick, or Parsippany, or Mahwah, or Moonachie, or Pompton Plains you had to take a bus into Port Authority in Manhattan and then take a bus out to your destination.

Across the river: the Manhattan skyline. Glimpse this way from the World Trade Center, you'll see us, ants scurrying at the base of the ever-changing Jersey City skyline (there really IS one!) Here is a nearly constant state of change as new buildings edge out the view of the old. Even the abandoned piers are coming back to life. You'll see.

Kayak around New York ... on the Hudson River

NO. You kayak around Hackensack. Maybe you're not from around here.

I thought I took a photo of these men on the river in their Speedo, but it was actually their Jet-Skis. The new English is like the 'new' math to me.

None of the ships passing by had bikini-clad ship's captains. Those captains are on catamarans in Margaritaville.

What a cheap way to get into someone's blog!

Fuji means Digital
Perhaps that's a loose translation, no? I thought Fuji meant man, or is that tojo? as in Tojo carrying machine for TCM the forklift company. But how can Fujifilm mean digital when digital has no film? Boy, am I getting confused!

Makes you wonder if those folks are full of hot air?

Cool Hudson

July - that hot hazy humid time in New Jersey - is a great time to remember how cold it gets here some times...

Ice bergs.
(As if there are
some other kind of bergs.)
Frozen muck in ten-ton blocks,
it's a different kind
of gray matter.
Many mini ice bergs
washed down river
from the Tappan Zee
and further up river, too.

One day all the ice flows
were across the river
on the Manhattan side.
Another day
we had our own
share of dirty bergs.

Near the shore,
fowl of the air
foraged in the icy overflow.
If it was a duck,
it was a small duck.
Its webbed feet
were bow-legged.
The fowl splayed
its feet and tried
to tread water.

It turned its head back
to its body and
tucked its beak
under its wing
and snuggled there.
Perhaps it was
trying to shut out
the low-tide river smell.

Hyatt Fish

We were surprised that some people didn't believe this fish was caught in the Hudson River in Jersey City on June 17, 2005. So, we dug up the rest of the photos and here you go. You wanna believe, believe. No believe, no believe.

Can that fish smile?

This fish has a reservation at the Hyatt on the Hudson in Jersey City. Juan the fisherman (back to camera) caught the striper mid afternoon on the Hyatt pier.

We were told that these stripers work their way up the Atlantic coast and duck in the brackish rivers looking for chum (ha ha). One of these fishermen said he caught four this size in one day - at this pier - his best day ever!
