Of course, today, his legs and feet are tired, not to mention the rest of him. And, what's with that chaffing where the sun don't shine?



Can't wait until next year ... or one of these days when I can tell you all about this race. For insurance, I brought my umbrella, but left it behind with all the backbpacks and such.



You know, it started to rain just before the race kicked off.



And it rained pretty well into mile two. It was a cooling rain we reminded ourselves. And it brought a beautiful reminder, over a Central Park baseball field, of the beauty of the rain.



Your favorite uncle would like to thank colleague Dawn W. for helping him find the right subway car and Central Park, too. Not to mention the kindness of strangers on our way home who got us to the PATH station from the NYC subway.

You Can't Get There From Here

The 12-mile trip from northeastern Essex County to the Hudson River at Jersey City is about 40 minutes by car.

That's about 20 minutes to Jersey City and at least another 20 minutes to cross the four miles of Jersey City.

Of course, that's on a good day, with no traffic tie ups or bad weather, or such. (Now, there's a good laugh! HAH!)

Parking, in September 1999, was about $135 a month and jumped to well over $225 a month in June 2000, when Hyatt hotel construction began on the pier that until then had provided parking for several hundred cars.
Nowadays, if you have to ask, you can't afford it.



To make a long story short. I don't make that drive anymore.

In July 2000, I began using mass transportation to get to work - for the first time in my life. It's less than $135 a month with passes and such.

Having grown up in urban-suburban northern New Jersey, taking a bus or train to work was always something other people did.

Besides, to get from northeastern Essex County to Englewood, or East Brunswick, or Parsippany, or Mahwah, or Moonachie, or Pompton Plains you had to take a bus into Port Authority in Manhattan and then take a bus out to your destination.

Tenant Appreciation Day

I took some pictures of the tent and fun from our 8th floor window.

I went down for an ice cream, turned in my ticket, and got a Good Humor bar. I ate my chocolate eclair ice cream bar in the shade.

It was hot. The hottest day in July. People were milling around on the blacktop for a free ice cream bar. Some folks were shooting hoops. Others were trying to dunk the man in the water. I think it was for charity, but I didn't go in the sun to find out.

I didn't see anyone I know.

None of the pretty girls said Aloha. I didn't take any of their pictures.

Dunk the man in water! Yup. He got a day's pay to get dunked in cool water on a hot day!
