Is there anything more than anecdotal evidence that when their only (or last) child goes off to college (or work) the empty nesters get a dog?
In my case we had an empty house for one year – after our 10 year old yellow Lab died – and our daughter went back to college. Then we got a chocolate Lab.
Her friend’s parents got a golden retriever when their daughter moved out of the house to take a job in Trenton.
Our other friends got a replacement Lab after theirs died and their son went off to college.
In our case, when our daughter comes for a visit, the dog is exceedingly excited to greet HIS NEW TOY.
