Waiting for Jerry the Ice Cream Man

Back in the day, our refrigerator's freezer was the size that fit two ice trays and a pound of chop meat. Then that small cool space froze over and there was never room for ice cream except at your birthday!
It was the same way up and down the block on Gless Avenue in Belleville, N.J. Anybody who got rid of their ice box and got an electric refrigerator had about the same amount of freezer space.
This is Jersey. It's hot in the summer in New Jersey. We were hot. We sweated and drank tap water from the garden hose to cool off. We ran around in the sun, got sun burn, it peeled, and we went back out in the sun.

In the summer, it was hot. We played in the heat. We kids kept cool by running around outside and making our own breezes. We played hide-and-seek and learned to count to 100 by fives. At our peak on that one dead end block we had up to 28 kids. (We're talking baby boom, here.)

My Other Mother, in one sentence

The last time I saw Grandma, I helped her to her seat in the back of Gramp’s white Oldsmobile sedan where she had taken to be seated as her disease took her away and it never really mattered to her where she sat or where she went or what she was doing – it never seemed to us, especially later as time wore on and she left us piece by piece, memory by memory – well, it never seemed to us that she had any idea where she was or what she was doing or whether she was at home watching one of Gramp’s fishing shows on cable, or finishing a crossword puzzle as she loved to do, or living somewhere in her head far away where everything is peaceful, like being semi-asleep, or longing to sleep – I saw her that last time when I picked up her light body and shifted her inward so we could seatbelt her so she wouldn’t fall over as Gramp turned the corner, I kissed her, said goodbye, silently.

We're tempted to name our next collection of poetry Naked Elvis Presley And Live, Nude Poetry because fans of Elvis Presley will check it out to see if it contains poems about Elvis Presley, and nearly everyone else searching for live nude anything on the Internet will also stop by to check it out.

Perhaps we should work in Britney Spears and that Jessica Alba gal into the subtitle. Can anyone help me out with some famous stars who would also draw big on a Google search? Natalie Portman? I think she was in that hit movie Black Swan, but don't quote me on that, I haven't even seen the latest True Grit movie. I'd like to, you know, but I only get out to see one or two movies a year. I like the popcorn in movie theaters, and those huge Coca-cola soda pops they sell you.

If I can have the book come out in May, I can tout Bob Dylan's 70th birthday in the subtitle. Then all those Dylan Thomas and Bob Dylan fans will check it out, then curse me out, but, hey, what did you expect for free?

Iomega - pfffttt - 1TB hard drive crashes after one week

If I ever say "I'm going to Staples to buy an Iomega hard drive," please break my leg.

You don't really have to worry about me saying that - because I will never buy another Iomega product anywhere, including Staples.

A few weeks ago I bought a 1TB Iomega Desktop Hard Drive. Within a week, after I stored over 60gb of data, the drive crashed.

When the techs at Staples in Clifton confirmed that the new hard drive failed, they said they'd give me a replacement, which they did. But when I asked about getting my data off the fried hard drive, they said they'd have to charge me to do it. And as for the unit that failed, they had to send it back to Iomega.

I asked Iomega and here's what they said:

"Data recovery services are very expensive to provide, and are not built into the cost structure for each Iomega product, and indeed, the computer industry in general does not make any guarantee that you will never lose a file or lose any data once you buy a computer. For example, if your computer crashes and you lose a memo or letter from your IBM or Gateway computer, you cannot recover for data loss. Data recovery is an extra service performed by trained specialists, after studying the specific details in a particular data loss situation."

I think that's a lame answer for a company that sells back up hard drives. We're not talking about never losing a file, we're talking about a week-old unit failing completely.

Iomega rep: "I am sorry but due to the cost of data recover, and the computer industry standard, we do not provide free data recovery."

So, now, I have a replacement 1TB Iomega Desktop hard drive and the darn thing is hot all the time. Most of the time, it's warm, but some times it's hot.

Iomega: The temperature of the drive is normal.
Iomega: Yes, it is still within the normal temperature ranges.

I don't have a lot of confidence in Iomega hard drives now. And if I were you, I wouldn't, either.

As for Staples and they way they treat a long-time customer, I'm disappointed in their customer service and management call on this one.

I know, this is just one little rant by one little guy on some obscure blog, but I feel better just sharing it with whoever stumbles upon this irate tirade about Staples and Iomega Prestige Hard Drives.

Pop Tarts World in Times Square, N.Y.

When the new Pop Tarts Store opened in New York City last week, it was a bit too crowded to get in during my morning commute.

On opening day, TV news crews parked their vans in the street and hungry Pop Tarts lovers lined up behind barricades.

Today, I happened to be early and set my goal for the store on W 42nd Street near Bryant Park.

The store opens at 8:30 and it was barely 9, so that would give me plenty of time to browse the T-shirts, mugs and other knick-knacks that you probably can't buy anywhere else in the world!

Visions of privately concocted Pop Tarts danced in my head. Perhaps peanut butter and blueberry, with sparkles embedded in the frosting. I could almost taste the pastries as I commuted with the rest of the morning crowd as they headed to work.

I grew suspicious when I approached the store and there was no line outside. Perhaps the hoopla died and I'd be able to walk in and have the place to myself. I was getting a sugar high just thinking all those Pop Tarts waiting for me.

But, alas, a hand-written sign inside the store read Open at 11 a.m. today only.

I looked in the window and the place was blank. There were the biggest Pop Tarts boxes I ever saw. And T-shirts so close I could almost reach them. But all for naught on the other side of the locked door.

Another day, another morning, I shall visit this store before it closes.

These past few days in New Orleans have beeen great. We're looking forward to the next few days here ... taking in the WW2 Museum, the French Quarter, the moon walk, the Audubon aquarium. Lots of great places to see and so many great places for great meals.

The city is in great shape. The people are pleasant and accommodating. It's a pleasure to deal with the locals. So, come on down, stay a while, spend a bit, have a great time.

A jumbo jetliner that serves as Air Force One, escorted by military jets, flew over Lower Manhattan Monday morning, frightening office workers and causing evacuations in what turned out to be a publicity operation approved by a unit of the U.S. Air Force.

At around 10 a.m. EDT, the Boeing 747 was seen flying low over the southern tip of Manhattan and at one point was seen circling the Goldman Sachs Tower in nearby Jersey City, N.J.

The larger of the two planes was one of two highly customized Boeing 747-200 series aircraft that serve as Air Force One -- when the Commander-in-Chief is on board. Adele Kenny is the author of 23 books (poetry and nonfiction). Over 700 of her poems, articles, and reviews have been published in journals throughout North and South America, the UK, Europe, Australia, and Asia, as well as in books and anthologies published by Crown, Mc-Graw Hill, and Tuttle. She served as associate editor of The Antiquer: Fine Art & Antiques from 2000-2005 and is currently poetry editor of Tiferet: A Journal of Spiritual Literature.

Adele is the recipient of various honors and awards, including poetry fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. She received an award for the 2007 Merton Poetry of the Sacred Prize, honorable mention in the 2006 Allen Ginsberg Poetry Awards, and was a finalist for the 2006 Paumanok Poetry Award.

His poem Hands In Socks was named Editor’s Choice in the 2008 Allen Ginsberg Awards. His poem Ten Minutes earned Honorable Mention in the 2009 Allen Ginsberg Awards.

His work has been published in Paterson Literary Review; Celebrating William Carlos Williams and The Poetry of Place: North Jersey in Poetry; Rattlesnake Review (Poetry With Fangs); Medusa’s Kitchen; Voices in Italian Americana; Edison Literary Review; Journal of New Jersey Poets; CHEST, the Journal of the American College of Chest Physicians; The Idiom; MEWS; Raving Dove; More Sweet Lemons; The Poem Factory; and PowWow Review.

His first poetry chapbook, Days You Knew Me, was published in 1976. Buccino has written three books of essays based in and around Nutley and Belleville, N.J. He published two biographies of the men from his home towns who died while in service.

Buccino to read ‘Nutley’ poem at anthology launch

Local writer scores a poem about Nutley’s rich history in the new anthology “The American Voice in Poetry: The Legacy of Whitman, Williams and Ginsberg” being published as part of the Distinguished Poets Series at the Poetry Center in Paterson.

The Nutley author weaves a poem around Frances Goodrich, who grew up in town and went on to write the “Thin Man” film series and later won a Pulitzer Prize for the play “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

Buccino’s poem suggests Goodrich’s screenplay for the popular Christmas film “It’s A Wonderful Life” has hints of old Nutley, and that the scene of the angel and George on the bridge may have been inspired by the Lyndhurst bridge over the Passaic River, not far from where Goodrich grew up.

In recalling Nutley of about 100 years ago, Buccino cites Guthrie’s Dry Good Store and some of our famous residents and visitors, including Mark Twain, Annie Oakley and Richard Stockton lining up for that new invention called ice cream.

Frances Goodrich was inducted into the Nutley Hall of Fame in 2005. Buccino stood in for the writer and her family at the ceremony.

Buccino will read “A Wonderful Town” at the book launch and poetry reading by contributors to the anthology on April 10, at 1 P.M., Hamilton Club Building, 32 Church Street, Paterson, N.J. For more information, visit Distinguished Poets Series http://old.pccc.edu/poetry/events.htm

In the morning I will be leaving my 2008 Rogue in your shop for your mechanics to fix the same problem that was just over a year ago.

You probably don't remember me or my car, but early last year we could not get the driver's door to open from the outside. You could imagine how this situation might become life threatening were it necessary to enter the car quickly only to find the door would not open.

Well, a year ago, your tech found that the left front door handle cable had come loose. The tech resecured and installed the cable assembly and rechecked operation so that the door now operates as designed.

Perhaps the tech who next works on my car will find a similar inconvenience and once again resecure the cable assembly as was done last year.

IMHO this should not have happened last year, although it was fixed without charge and we were on our way. IMHO, it certainly should not have happened a second time. Perhaps an independent investigation should be held to review how many of these repairs have been made on this make and model car.

At the very least, I should expect to be asked to pay for this repair. I'm sure you will do right by this repair. Time will tell.

I'll keep you posted on how things go at the repair shop.

And now, after the service, I have to say Nissan treated us very well, the vehicle was ready when promised and there was no charge to fix the cable a second time. I would recomment Lynne's Nissan in Bloomfield, NJ, for warranty service for your car.

Haiti Relief Update from Yvonne Trimble

If it rains we will die!

US soldiers and humvees surround the entrance to the Salvation Army on Delmas 2 in Port au Prince. A line of Haitians moves through the back entrance of the walled property and exits through the front gate. They are each given a small box of food.

Outside a Haitian man, grateful for the food, explains, "Thousands of children are living without shelter on Delmas 2, if it rains they will die!" Today the skies over the city of two million Haitians affected by January 12's massive quake are ominously dark. Rain is on its way.

All over Port au Prince tent cities in side streets, city parks, parking lots, front yards have become a home for Haiti's innumerable homeless possibly 500,000 people.

Medical care, food and water are still the priority in the country ripped apart by a massive 7.0 earthquake. The approaching rainy season moves shelter to first place.

Haiti Earthquake - update from Yvonne Trimble

Culture of Indifference, Haiti's Real Disaster
Jan. 24, 2010

Port au Prince, Haiti -- When a 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti on January 12 at 4:53 PM hospital employees fled. Many themselves suffered the effects of Port au Prince's devastating quake. Hospitals that did not collapse were virtually abandoned by Haitian doctors, nurses and administrators. Patients were left alone. Health care facilities that were not structurally damaged became trauma centers for US medical teams responding to Haiti's need.

As news of the quake spread around the world, American medical professionals flew into the Dominican Republic and drove across the border into Haiti. Some even chartered private planes to rush to Haitian victims need. They brought supplies, machines, everything they could carry including their living quarters - tents and sleeping bags.

Yesterday Haitian hospital personnel began to return to work. They found their understaffed inefficent businesses were miraculously treating double their capacity. Dressings are changed daily when necessary, and meds are dispersed immediately and free of charge. Patients are handed their records so they can get follow up treatment at any of the field hospitals set up in and around Port au Prince.

Early morning organizational meetings previously run by professional disaster response coordinators are now conducted by indifferent Haitian hospital directors and administrators.

In a meeting at the Hopital Communautaire on Rue Frere, Delmas yesterday a Haitain doctor insisted that all patient records be kept by the hospital. There is a shopping bag of such records behind the admission window already. An American orthopedic surgeon was stunned by the demand, "If you do that your hospital will be more dysfunctional than it already is."

Outside the hospital Haitians live under sheets strung between trees and in the open on cardboard covered with a sheet. They are homeless, they are wounded, they have no cash. Inside Haitian staff are locking the donated supplies in depots and charging for every prescription, x-ray and IV bag.

At Haiti's Baptist Mission Hospital a 25 year old Haitian woman was in critical condition her blood type was necessary to get donor blood for a transfusion. An American doctor walked with her missionary translator to the lab, the order for the blood coding in her hand. The laboratory door was shut and padlocked, it was a half hour before closing time.

The missionary asked the guard where the lab tech was, he said she went home. A few moments later the guard returned with the lab tech and the results were in the doctor's hand. A donor was found and the Haitian patient's life was spared.

In the OR where the transfusion was performed the missionary told the Haitian American nurse about the lab being shut thirty minutes early. The nurse said, "I will go and talk to her now."

The next morning when the missionary came to begin another fifteen hour day translating for the American medical team the Haitian Baptist Hospital Administrator told her, "Your services are no longer needed here."

The culture of indifference in Haiti dictates tacit compliance with inefficency and negligence, even if it costs lives. The missionary translator who reported the lab's early closing had violated that cultural rule.

Today the American doctors continued work at the Haiti Baptist Mission Hospital is in jeopardy if that missionary translator is allowed to help them communicate with their suffering Haitian patients. They have been warned by the Haitian Administrator.

The twenty five year old Haitian woman survived.

Haiti Survivor - Rose Michelle
January 22, 2010;

Port au Prince, Haiti -- Everyday since a 7.0 quake destroyed much of Port au Prince Haiti, medical teams from around the world are arriving to assist the wounded. Port au Prince's hospitals have never afforded Haitians enough capacity or expertise, until this week. Usually Haitians respond to their hospitals as turn of the century death wards where they go as a last resort to die. Since the January 12 quake that has changed.

At the Baptist Hospital in the mountains surrounding Port au Prince traumatized survivors are benefiting from the dedication and skill of American doctors and nurses. Medical teams work for a week until another team arrives to relieve them. Fifteen hour days are the norm. This process will continue until everyone is seen and followed up.

Dilapitated beds with ancient mattresses fill four dank wards on the mission hospital. Hallway floors are littered with patients until a bed is free. A rusty bed is better than the tile floor and Americans check on patients four times a day. No one is overlooked or forgotten.

In ward MF, bed number 2 is an eight year old girl. Rose Michelle was in her two room block house when the quake struck on Tuesday, January 12. Concrete blocks fell pinning her to the ground. She has a deep wound on her right arm but that is nothing compared to the pelvic fracture that prevents little Rose from sitting or standing.

At first Rose Michelle screamed when someone in scrubs appeared. Shots, IVs, drawing blood it all hurts so much. Today Rose was all smiles, first there was the painless sonogram.

A portable machine brought by the Americans revealed no ruptured organs and no broken bones. Then the American pediatric nurse removed the irritating catheter. And finally wonder of wonders Rose was visited by Haiti's American missionary and television celebrity, Frere Joel.

Joel Trimble a missionary evangelist to Haiti since 1975 hosts a Creole Christian television show La Bonne Nouvelle. For five years now Trimble's show holds the number one slot for all programming viewed in Haiti. La Bonne Nouvelle, The Good News, is aired 46 times a week throughout the country and the US east coast. The show is on 13 television stations. Rose is an avid fan of Frere Joel, Brother Joel.

Trimble's wife, Yvonne, translates for American doctors at the Baptist Hospital. While diverting the child's attention during a stressful blood test Yvonne learned eight year old Rose Michelle was a fan of the couple's show. Yvonne promised Rose if she drank her liquids Frere Joel would come to visit her and he did.

On day eight after a virulent 7.0 quake destroyed the capitol of Port au Prince another powerful 6.1 danced my bed in place early this morning. Structures severely damaged by last Tuesday's 7.0 collapsed with this mornings 6.0. Screams and wails ascended as streets and parks strewn with Haitians shuddered.

US forces converted the Port au Prince Airport into a military airfield receiving cargo planes and tasks force from donors nations. A US General and troops are at the city's General Hospital.

Fear mongering US media has sensationalized isolated looting and created zero tolerance by nervous US troops and local vigilantes.

Yesterday after an exhausting day of standing on the tarmac waiting for medical supplies and volunteers, I finally began my journey home. The car overheated and I was forced to pull off the road. Too hungry and tired to get out, I rested against the seat and resigned to just waiting for it to cool. Where would I get a bucket of water in a city where hundreds of Haitians queued behind water trucks?

A strong Haitian voice revived my spirit, "Madame, What do you need?" In moments four Haitian men with two buckets of water were releasing the radiator cap, restarting the engine, flushing the radiator and cheerfully sending me on my way. Moved by the genteel compassion of men who rose from seats in front of their collapsed home meet my need, I wept.

When my car overheated on Delmas today, I was too exhausted to think about finding water. Suddenly three young Haitian men appeared with two buckets of water, released the radiator cap, started the engine, flushed the radiator, and sent me on my way. No violence, no looting, no aggression. I was so moved I cried the rest of the way up Delmas.

Media and US government are in lock step, if there is one rescue team the media is with them. Problem is they are showing you the microcosim of the situation, 99% of buildings down will see no search and rescue team. 99% of Haitians will get no relief distribution.

There is virtually NO US relief effort here, if they could not respond to Katrina in their own country how can they help Haiti? Leogane was the epicenter and it is 90% destroyed bodies in the street NO relief, NO doctors, NO US media, NOTHING!!

Helicopters buzz overhead, but they cannot see the sign. UN troops drive by but they are afraid of the raucous crowd. I will speak for you I reassure them, but the truth is I have just criss crossed the heap of concrete graves that was once the capitol of Haiti, miles of devastation and saw only one team of foreign rescue workers with two dogs.

A handmade banner on ropes is stretched across the Route du Canape Vert with a poignant plea painted in yellow: " We Need Help - Aidez Nous". It is bilingual, it is a cry of desperation. Hundreds of Haitians are gathered in the street shouting that there are survivors under the rubble. The crowd has been feeding them water and food through openings in the concrete prison created by Tuesday's powerful quake, but now the water and food is running out. The crowd is frantic they know the survivors they have so painstakingly kept alive for four days now will be victims if help does not come soon....

The women tell me their elder parents and eight children were killed on Tuesday when the 7.0 quake literally shook Haiti....

Yvonne and I are safe, our son Paul is safe and our house and car have not been damaged by the two earthquakes that hit Haiti on January 12. The first quake a 7.0 rocked our house like a leaf in the wind with an epicenter just 5 miles south of us. Exactly seven minutes later a second quake a 5.9, hit 25 miles away. Since that fateful hour Haiti has been rocked by over 40 tremors with average strength of 5.0 which makes those tremors earthquakes! ...

We came across this ad for a booklet, "No, I'm Watching Football - your guide to a successful football watching relationship."

Supposedly, this handy little booklet shows you how to "set a precedent with the significant so you can watch all the Sunday football action you want!"

C'mon, shouldn't you guys be vacuuming the house or loading the laundry instead of watching football for hours and hours? I mean the Giants are done, and the Jets are an illusion. So, what's the point of watching grown men run into each other to knock each other down, or better yet, break something on the other guy?

"NO! I’m Watching Football is an informative, fun read for anyone who enjoys watching football or anyone who has ever fought with your significant other about watching football!" Or so they say. Two thousand eight hundred eighty-two
Nutley sons fought in World War II
bravely boarding the bus
in the parade past the high school
and on off to Fort Dix & beyond.
The grunts in the ditches,
the pilots, navigators & bombardiers in the clouds,
the privates, sergeants and officers, too.
The heroes of north Africa
Sicily, the Boot, D-Day & Guadalcanal
Iwo Jima and so many more places
no one, then or since, ever heard of.
Our Nutley sons fought & many died
to prove that freedom is not free.

The chime, soft and soothing, struck
when each name is read.
Seventeen here – World War I
Twelve there – Korean War
Nine more here – Peacetime Vigilance
Nine there – Vietnam War
Ninety-two here – World War II.
And we remember the
Nutley sons who played on our streets
marched in the high school band
camped as young boy scouts
delivered our newspapers
hit a long, fly ball over the Oval fence
and reached out and caught that touchdown pass.
They played on our streets.
They lived in our houses.
They loved our town.

why I talk to my dad more now
than when he was here.

Maybe as I get older and closer to his age
I'm finally seeing things the way he did
or find some kind of comfort in talking
to him from inside my head

Dad always got the tough jobs, you know,
and I, I was the toughest job he ever had.
I spat on people. They teased me.
I bopped them with my sister's baton.
They teased me, and laughed at me.
I bit them on the ass.
They stuffed me in a garbage can.

So it fell to him to be the bearer
of the swift and mighty blow
to bring the little bastard to his senses
or to render him senseless so he
couldn't hurt anyone for a while.

... But these decades later I find
We talk more now
and I have a different view
of him and the years
we spent together.
I know he was winging it
and I was a whirling dervish.

D-Day, 65th anniversary, Normandy invasion

The Allied invasion of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944, marked the beginning of the last ten months of World War II in Europe.

More than 110 Belleville sons died in World War II. Nutley sent 2,882 men and women into service during WWII, 92 never came home. Remember their sacrifice as you enjoy the freedom they died to preserve.

A Father's Place

A Father's Place

Dads explain what’s fair or unfair and moms decide when it is okay to go out and play. When she tells her friend she has to go in but goes out five minutes later to play with someone else, Dad says how would you feel if they did that to you? She knows how she would feel and pledges not to do it again. But dad knows that she will, and when she does, she’ll remember what her dad said. Maybe.

Dads are their children’s protectors. Dads chase the mon¬sters out of the closet at night. Dads have a special hug that resolves a nightmare’s terror. Dads are as tall as the sky and can reach the cookies moms hide on the top shelf.

Dads have to be dads sometimes. That means they have to yell and maybe spank. Any child can tell you that nobody hits as hard as daddies can. Not even Grandpa. Yet after every repri¬mand comes the guilt of being a daddy. Dads want to be kids, but too often get trapped into being adults.

Dads are as old as forever. They listen to ‘old people’ music like Led Zeppelin and the Beatles. Their car radios are set to all¬ talk stations. Yet, with their own children, dads are forever young. They play horse, hide and seek and checkers when they are in the mood and decide to make time. Dads don’t like to play checkers too much because they lose a lot.
On a hot summer day, dads will chase you around with a water pistol, and sometimes even let you sneak up on them with the garden hose.
Dads have the largest, strongest hands in the world. Little girls in their cradles tightly grab their dad’s index finger and it’s as big as the world outside. But for dads, they see that those small hands hold so much. They hold the future and all dad’s hopes. They instill the fear of God in Dad when he senses the responsi¬bility in that precious grip.

Dads fix everything. But, what they actually do is take it to their side of the basement and shelve it until everyone forgets whatever it was that was broken.

The small town of Nutley in northeast New Jersey lost 92 young men in WWII, 17 in WWI, nine in Korea, nine in Vietnam, and nine Nutley sons who died in service during peace time.

Veteran reads the names of those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom in World War II

The neighboring small town of Belleville lost 112 in WWII, 20 in WWI, four in Korea, 11 in Vietnam, and three Belleville sons in service during peace time.

Zamboni Chooses Cheerios Over Family

Family pet faces Cheerios rehab

Our 100-pound Labrador retriever is apparently no match for the drugs hidden in Big G, little O Cheerios.

Until recently, Zamboni, our 6 1/2 year-old chocolate Lab, was considered a 100-pound cushion-mush-on who changed cushions every few hours to obtain his perfect level of rest for the perfect length of time on the perfect soft, softer and softest of his various cushions.

But new information from the Federal Drug Administration indicates that our hapless puppy may be a victim of a cruel hoax where a cereal conglomerate has been selling a drug inside their cereal without proper notice on the packaging.

DAR Museum, in New Jersey!

On Saturday May 16, 2009 the DAR museum on Rte 23 north will be open for the season.

The museum is the grand home of the Rev. Elias VanBunshooten and dates back to the late 1700s. The museum features many original family pieces from the VanBunschooten/Cooper families. The lovely Dutch colonial home and the outbuildings will all be open for viewing and touring. Also housed in the museum is a local genealogy library.

The Chinkchewunska Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution operates the museum. It is open to the public on Thursdays and Saturdays between 1 PM and 4 PM from May 17 through October 15. Donation is $4 for adults, $3 for Senior citizens over 55 on Thursdays and $1 for children. This year, in honor of 100 years of Boy Scouts, boy scouts in uniform will be admitted to the museum for free!

The museum is located at 1097, Route 23 North in scenic Wantage township. School and other groups are asked to please call ahead for an appointment. Contact 973-875-4610 for directions and appointments. Other questions, call 973-875-2204.

War Memorial Books Updated

Belleville Sons Honor Roll and Nutley Sons Honor Roll latest print editions now available digitally, online

With his daughter Andrea, Anthony Buccino researched the unsung and long forgotten heroes of earlier generations from his present and former hometowns. His latest project – the Nutley Sons and Belleville Sons honor rolls – preserves for future generations of two towns the stories of 347 young men who paid for our freedom with their lives.

The Buccinos collected the stories of 138 Nutley sons and 209 Belleville sons who perished while in service to the United States during the American Revolution, Civil War, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and as peacekeepers preventing war.

With the researching help of his daughter Andrea, the stories of the men were collected, edited and cross-referenced with newspaper accounts, Freedom of Information Act documents and veterans groups accounts.

The ongoing research project resulted in a searchable Internet web site recording the stories of the young men from both towns. Buccino published paperback editions of the collected biographies. Recently, new editions of each book were published and are now available digitally.

Suddenly, with the publication of the Honor Roll tales, the stories, untold and forgotten for 40, 60, and nearly 100 years were suddenly being talked about in Veterans clubs, middle school auditoriums and home libraries.

Buccino heard from widows, sisters, brothers, children, nieces and nephews of fallen soldiers who thanked him after they found their long lost loved one’s tale retold with a fresh breath. They expressed comfort that their loved ones were not forgotten.

In the spring 2005, a new memorial in Nutley was dedicated to Nutley casualties who, it was realized through this research, were not listed on any of the town’s 16 war memorials. Buccino is working with the mayor, veterans groups, and other sponsors and using book sales money to help finance the long overdue memorial.

In May, a new memorial to nine men who died in peacetime was dedicated in Nutley - based on the research in Nutley Sons Honor Roll.

The research effort was recognized by Buccino was named the recipient of the UNICO National 2005 Grand Order Filippo Mazzei William Paca Americanism Award.

UNICO, the largest Italian-American service organization in the United States, said the Americanism Award Committee selected Buccino for his noteworthy efforts in “researching historical facts and contributions of the many unsung heroes who have given their lives for our country.”

This prestigious award is named in honor of Philip Mazzei, an Italian and confidant of Thomas Jefferson, whose ideas and philosophies were instrumental in the formation of the most fundamental principles of our great nation.
The William Paca Award is presented in recognition of historical research and in recognition of the contributions of the many unsung heroes whose lives were expended in making our country the beacon of freedom in the world today.

In November 2005, more than 150 names were added to the Belleville memorial on Union Avenue, Bellleville, after having the blank slate for 50 years awaiting the list of names which was based on the research in Belleville Sons Honor Roll.

Biographies of the men of Belleville, N.J., who died while in service. In the last century, 156 Belleville sons died while in service to their country. World War II, by far, took the largest toll of 117 young men. World War I took 20 young lives. The Korean War took four lives, and preserving the peace cost us three more Belleville Sons.

Pay No Attention To That Airliner Out Your Window

Just in time for morning coffee break, there outside your window, a few hundred yards above the nearest tall building, there goes a huge commercial jet heading west, followed by a fighter jet.

Maybe we're hallucinating?

No, there it goes again. A commercial jet flying low over Jersey City skyscrapers, followed by a fighter jet.

Wow, this is unreal. Maybe I should pack my bags and plan a way to get home.

Three is the magic number. The jets pass over head. I should get out my camera in case it happens again.

But no, we're given the word to evacuate the building.
You don't have to tell us twice. We're calmly heading down the fire stairs, out into a surprisingly clear day.

Feels like we've been through this before.

Remembering Pat on her 62nd birthday ...

Other summer nights we'd run after

the "Mosquito Man" chasing him through the sweet-smelling blue cloud of smoke emitting from his county-owned jeep. It could kill mosquitos but we never gave a thought as to what it could do to us.
Next door to the south lived Benny and Rosie. Benny let me watch The Three Stooges on his TV when my father had enough and scooted me outdoors.
Whenever their niece Gloria got a second game for Christmas or her birthday, she left the extra at Uncle Ben and Rosie's. Then on rainy days, Gloria and I would play Mouse Trap or whatever.
Rosie's sister Helen used to make the summer for Lulu and me. Helen drove her husband Mitch to work and took the family Chevy for the day. She drove us to Sun Tan Lake far off in the woods of northern New Jersey.
Along with her daughters, Patricia, Mary Ellen and Gloria, she brought my mom, her bingo partner, Lulu and me. Patricia always tried to convince Lulu and me to tell anyone we met that we were cousins.
We were practically related: Our fathers had grown up next door to each other and our mothers had gone to bingo since the game was invented. My dad was Mary Ellen's godfather and Mitch was my godfather.
We saw more of them than many of our real relatives. They were always visiting next door. And at every Pigeon Club banquet, I had to dance one obligatory dance with Gloria who was one year older and a few inches taller. ...

Elementary student strip search

Seems like this kind of story surfaces every few years or so. Some school decides to strip search a kid and eventually the news gets out and there's a flurry of invective and then it all seems to fade away.

Perhaps now that the Supreme Court of the United States is looking into the strip search of an elementary student in Arizona, the news will play a tad longer on the front page.

But unless you've ever been an elementary student strip-searched by persons of authority, you'll never comprehend the shame and terror. It stays with you forever.

"...Irked at the boys’ failure to come forward with what they had done in their Fruit of the Loom briefs in their charcoal gray slacks, the Sisters herded the four boys down the hallway without allowing the boys a quick prayer to any of the sacred statues in the hall.
They were led as sheep by a shepherd towards the boys’ lavatory. Sister JoAnn stayed behind, just outside the two classrooms to ensure their peaceful, if curious study, while Sister Lenore (or was it Eleanor?) directed the trembling boys into the boys’ lavatory.
She ordered them to stand facing the urinals, one for each of the four boys who had been standing in the hallway next to MaryAnn who had soiled her delicate unmentionables.

The boys trembled, first at a woman in the boys’ lavatory, then at a nun in the boys’ lavatory, and then when Sister Lenore (or was it Eleanor?) ordered, “Drop your trousers.”

“God, help the boy who fouled up the hallway,” she inveighed.

Shyly, each boy, not understanding the trouble each boy was in because of what one of the other three must have done, looked aside at the other boys.

“No talking. Eyes straight ahead,” Sister Lenore barked, her scream echoing against the tile like a doo-wop group’s tune.

With her nose, Sister Lenore’s tried to head off the incident by discovering which of the boys had soiled his trousers before the boys would have to do what she had ordered.

Bashfully, the boys in front of other boys for the first time in their lives began to unbuckle their belts, one boy after the other, then all at the same time. One pair of trousers fell, then another, and another and another.

“No! Enough!” Sister Lenore called curtly called when one boy began to drop his lily white Fruit Of The Loom briefs.

Using her strong Roman nose to sniff out evil-doings in little third grade boys, Sister Lenore inspected the back of the boys’ white underwear from several feet away. In their white cotton briefs, the boys stood facing cold white urinals.

Perhaps it was the smell of this place, or the white disks near the urinal drains, or the smell of cold, hard fear like the cold hard urinal enamel that set the little boys trembling, trying so hard not to cry in front of each other.

Terror flushed inside their racing hearts. They waited to hear the clicking wisp of black rosaries when Sister whisked a solid oak paddle from beneath her long black habit. Sacred fear as the martyrs themselves must have known roiled within the boys as they awaited the “Thwack!” and someone else’s sobbing scream and tears...
...Sister JoAnn, in her most authoritative voice ordered the full class of more than sixty third graders to never again mention what had happened in the hallway or “God, help you,” there would certainly be Hell to pay.

And to this day, no one ever said a word ..."

Subliminal messages for writers and poets

We heard of subliminal messages (buy my books) being slipped into movie previews in theatres, but what about subliminal messages (buy my books) being posted for poets and writers at a writing conference.

Anyone who was close enough to read the writing on the wall (sounds like the makings of a good Bible story) at writers workshop on Saturday must have been wondering due to the subliminal messages (buy my books) how low writers might go when facing the terrible brick wall of writer's block.

An easy date to remember

Letter of introduction

... She was taller than me then. Her presence in my French class always made my day. Her hair was dark and very long, and sometimes it tangled in front of her face and she had to brush it away. She dressed conservatively with long skirts and baggy pants. Never glamorous, pretty much the way you’d want your sister to dress. She was bright, being a friend of mine for a time notwithstanding. Yes, and she wore braces when I knew her.

I took her to see the double feature at the Royal, or maybe it was the Center, in Bloomfield Center. Then, afterwards, we went to IHOP for a bite. We met another kid I knew (not too well, actually); he asked me if she was my sister. Fortunately, I don’t remember if I said anything witty, I doubt it.

I decided to make a habit about reading movie reviews before I took dates to them. One movie we saw that night had Marlo Thomas as an unwed mother. She talked about taking the pill, and never making love because no one might ever ask her, or not taking the pill and getting pregnant. At the end of the movie, she breast-fed the baby. It was some first date. I squirmed in my seat, and even now, I can remember how sweaty my palms were when that movie ended.

The other movie was about a cowboy named Zachariah, and it was biblically significant. All that went right over my Catholic head.

At IHOP, my date had a strawberry shake and told me there were real strawberries in it. I didn’t have anything witty to say. I called my mom to come pick us up. We brought her home. Every time I called to talk to her, her mom said she was out with Jeff.

I stopped bothering her April 14, that year. It was an easy date to remember. That was when Lincoln was shot and when the Titanic sank.

Talk about irony, didn’t know anything about her, really. I learned later her father was a minister, so she probably understood all that Bible stuff in the movie. And later, I learned that Jeff was her brother.

In my yearbook, the next year, she wrote, “It was nice.” I saw her once since then, at a funeral, but I couldn’t say to her what was racing around in my mind. But like I say, she wasn’t there, at the reunion. Her brother was. He was bald, and he sang a solo. She still adds music to my words but it’s a soft tune...

A Hare-Raising Story

That old tale of Murphy the Easter bunny ...

I bought Murphy the Rabbit for my wife last year just before Easter.

That Murphy made it a full year with us is a great achievement in a house where the average pet fish lasts about three months. To tell the truth, I never really expected my wife to take care of the rabbit even if, theoretically, it was hers.

Every Easter for the six years we’ve been married, Dawn has talked about getting a pet rabbit like the little white bunny she had as a child. Another dependent was just what I needed. Of course, my wife, clever English teacher that she is, had her arguments all ready. This rabbit would save us money.

“If we got a bunny, we could keep it in fat Libby’s (our dog’s) old crate,” she reasoned. “Anyway, the crate’s just rusting away in the garage, so we wouldn’t have to buy anything new - except the rabbit and some food.”

That is the usual selling point of everything w: buy: Once bought we are done paying. It never works out that way, though.

In the pet store my wife told me, “I tested all the bunnies like we did the dog. You know, make a little noise and see which one sneaks up to investigate. This brown one here looks like Murphy.”

This Murphy had milk chocolate fluff for fur and looked as if it had been somewhere it shouldn’t have, because the tips of its fur were a smoky, dirty gray.

“Why not get a traditional white bunny? They’re the kind that deliver the eggs -and the chocolates,” I suggested. The look in her eyes told me it was not a discussion. This was Murphy.

The restaurant chain location in Clfiton, N.J., won't accept their own gift cards.

As I recall, companies that don't accept their own gift cards often end up taking cash only.

What's the point of buying someone you love dearly a gift card to use at their favorite restaurant and when they go there, for WEEKS now, Atlanta Bread can't accept their own gift card.

If you were a boy growing up in the late '80s or early '90s, odds are you had a crush on Danica McKellar. She played Winnie Cooper, the object of Fred Savage's obsession on "The Wonder Years." The nostalgia-fueled sitcom has been off the air since '93, but Ms. McKeller still has legions of fans. Today, most of them are heartbroken. Their fair Winnie is officially off the market.

Road Trip ... with pictures

We headed out to western New Jersey, then around noon headed home on Route 46 east. Of course, we had to stop for lunch at a Jersey diner. Our waitress was happy and spoke with an accent.

By the time we drove by the House of Norway furniture store in Fairfield, N.J., the March temperature had already hit 60 degrees.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY Is this thing working?

Remember TV with rabbit ears? And the only things digital were your fingers!

Now everybody has to have digital TV and high definition so they can watch their cartoons and sit-coms.

When I was a kid, I had a black and white portable Motorola TV and it lasted forever. It also weighed forever.

It got channels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and a few UHF channels - including Channel 68 with the Uncle Floyd show.

Imagine if we needed a converter to watch normal everyday regular channels? There would have been a revolt. Heck, back then, nobody could imagine paying money to watch television - unless you were in the hospital.

Well, aren't we all blessed that the government decided to hold off on the mandatory conversion.

Otherwise I'd have to throw out my little table top TV in the kitchen where I watch the end of Jeopardy! when I get in from work every day.

What a crazy country. Banks with no money and the government's worrying about my television reception.

Somebody give me back those old Roy Rogers shows... please.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY North To Alaska

Frankie Laine, Johnny Horton, John Wayne ... these are the names that pop into my head when I start singing to myself that old song, North To Alaska.

I always say Goin North to Alaska, north to the Russia zone.
Of course, those were the Cold War days and we all knew that the Russians wanted Alaska back after Seward swindled them out of it. That would have made a good James Bond plot, no? Not only did they find gold in Alaska, but later they found Texas Tea, Black Gold - oil. And lots of it.

But, of course, I was a kid and got the lyrics a bit mangled. Listen for yourself:

Breakfast at Raymond's

We wanted some place different for breakfast on Saturday. Doc Bu suggested Raymond's in Montclair.

The last time we were there, we ate on the sidewalk. That is, sidewalk dining, not standing up in the street. That last time I met Steve my ad salesman from our Modern Food Service magazine days which ended abruptly one February morning in Hackensack in 1999.

So, we didn't run into him. But we could have. I wondered whether I'd run into someone from MEWS since we were in the heart of Baristaville. If not the heart, then the side street or appendix.

I figured before I left, I'd meet someone I know from someplace else.

The food was really good. So was the coffee. And the service was just swell.

Having never been inside the building, I was taken by the old style cafeteria feel of the place. It was like the restaurant has been there a million years. Can you imagine all the chits and chats that took place inside these walls over the decades?

The place was nearly empty when we got there, they had just opened. We didn't exactly know when they opened, but we got one of the last parking places (What, a quarter for a half-hour? More than that?) on the street and strolled the empty early morning street. Church Street in Montclair makes you feel you are far away from the city, even though you are smack dab on its left elbow.

Well, if I ate any more fresh fruit, or drank anymore coffee, I'm sure I would have exploded. But the dining area is so far from today, and the sun light finagled its way through the front window and lit up the pretty bottles on the shelves.

Across the way from where we sat you could read the movie body count from some classic horror movies. I guess we're not too far from one or the other of the old movie or live theaters around this place.

So sure we would meet someone, I looked up before we left and lo and behold, there was that fellow from the Write Group, you know who he is, you've seen him at the readings. Yup, it's him. Carl Selinger, the author and all-around nice guy. So before you know it, I'm standing there yaking with Carl about poetry and upcoming open mics and my ladies have headed out for the yoga store down the block.

"... "BUS NINE RULES!" The older kids shouted. Other kids looked out windows. Girls studied and checked their homework papers. Tough guys with big hands, hard knuckles and big mouths to match, ruled bus nine. They yelled in our fresh faces, "N-O! FUTT NO!"

Many of us seventh graders were hopelessly intimidated by those rough ninth graders and their eighth grade sycophants who ruled our free bus.

At the bus stop in winter, they lit cigarettes and said they needed to smoke to keep warm. They ruled the back of the bus.

When we were lucky, we got to sit in front next to a friend, or near the window with a girl on the aisle.

The bullies ripped down advertisements from slots over the seats. When they got off the bus, as girls were climbing off, the boys ripped ad signs from the curb side of the bus.

"Where's your weak spot?" They shouted at the toughest of seventh grade boys.

"Where's your weak spot?" He bravely called back across a sea of seated girls.

Sneering in his face, "Be in the gym, seventh period, I'll show you my weak spot!"
And they laughed. ..."
