Gas Tops $4/Gallon, IRS Finally Ups Mileage Rate Posted: 23 Jun 2008 07:53 PM CDT It cost me nearly $50 to fill my tank this week - $50! And I drive a pretty fuel efficient car. Gas in my home town has hit $4.25/gallon for plain old standard gas. Yuck. Gas prices are just climbing and climbing. At least there's a small break: the mileage rate for business miles has finally been upped for tax purposes. The mileage rate will increase by eight cents to 58.5 cents a mile for all business miles driven as of July 1, 2008. The mileage rate for deductible medical or moving expenses will increase by eight cents to 27 cents a mile. Sadly, the rate for volunteering at charitable organizations is set by statute and remains at a pathetic 14 cents a mile. Congress, are you reading? How Many Hammers Is Enough?
Strange, it is, to sense the memories that suddenly swim to the surface like the picture in my head of my father as the ragtag kid who swam from the bottom of the Passaic River with a handful of mud, "See, wise guys? I really did swim to the bottom!"
Dad was a good swimmer, a very strong swimmer. It's not an inherited skill. It wasn't until my late teens that I knowingly approached water that was deeper than my Adam's Apple. Swimming is something a dad should teach his son before the boat starts to leak.
Building things was Dad's claim to fame. He never took complete credit for a building or a house, but he earned his pride in a job well done. His pride was of a true craftsman who looked back every time and said, "I built it with my own hands and tools. No one could have done it better." ...

Tonoose Survives the Central Park Race
Corporate Challenge Race
Not only survives but your favorite uncle actually enjoys the JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge 3.5 mile walk run.Of course, today, his legs and feet are tired, not to mention the rest of him. And, what's with that chaffing where the sun don't shine?
Can't wait until next year ... or one of these days when I can tell you all about this race. For insurance, I brought my umbrella, but left it behind with all the backbpacks and such.
You know, it started to rain just before the race kicked off.
And it rained pretty well into mile two. It was a cooling rain we reminded ourselves. And it brought a beautiful reminder, over a Central Park baseball field, of the beauty of the rain.
Your favorite uncle would like to thank colleague Dawn W. for helping him find the right subway car and Central Park, too. Not to mention the kindness of strangers on our way home who got us to the PATH station from the NYC subway.

Matthew 13:57
A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.
"A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household."
A prophet is nowhere without honour but in his country and among his family.
Matthew 11:6
"And blessed is he who does not take offense at Me."
Mark 6:4
"A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household."

A FATHER'S PLACE
"I wasn't more than five years old the night my father grabbed me with his vise-like hands on his jackhammer arms and swung me over the banister of our second story back porch.
Swinging me side to side 20 feet in the air above the concrete sidewalk, Dad and I were having fun. I was safe, safe from the world in his strong hands. Mother's screams of terror stilled my shrieks of joy.
That night, Dad and I bonded, though neither of us knew the lexicon. The image of that night dangles daily in the bittersweet memories my father left me. ..."
