Summer Arrives - 2005

The wind whips up the litter
On the shore on this June day
It’s been warm, no, hot
We were looking for the guy
With the pitch fork
Yeah, that hot
We wanted to know
If it was hotter here
Or where he came from

But today the sea is fierce
The waves kick up over the walls
The breeze has come from some
Day the wind got lost in October
& if it weren’t June you’d say
it was time to run in & get a coat

The sky clouds kind of look
Like sprawling angels
Reaching for one another
Like in that famous painting
On the church ceiling
But now the sky has changed
The sun is a stranger &
There’s only one small patch of blue
It’s a back drop for the jet
Silhouette & the buildings
Across the way seem gray
In the haze of humanity
The willows weep & wave
Over my head on this concrete bench
The noises high & distant
Mingle with splashing water
Thumping against rocks

I can see the faux lighthouse
Red & white stripes
All for decoration I presume
Like the crane floating down river
On a barge

Fresh babies out
for the first time
In the June sun,
kids, June isn’t
always this cold
and soon your
tiny feet will
be dancing, kicking off socks
to squiggle in the breeze

the jogger scoots past
the cigarette mafia
he’s wearing shorts &
a T-shirt that says
Cape Cod & a flag design
He jogs past the twins
In their double kid stroller
And bare feet
Waiting for the sun to
Kick through this cold
June day by the sea.
